Lets Play A Game Of Dominoes, Anyone? :D

I was really looking into making a really fun, challenging and unique recipe, which is sometimes really hard to find with limited ingredients. At first I was going to look into making Christmas/seasonal recipes; however I thought I leave that for next month since that will be my first December with this blog. This blog will be brand new to Christmas seasonal recipes so I'm excited to show some really fun treats to the world.

So since that was left off the table of possibility I began to lean towards cookie recipes in my baking books. I came across a really cute idea with making cookies look like dominoes and that struck me has a challenge. So I shot out of my chair, whipped on the hairnet, tighten up my Christmas apron ( Yes! Christmas apron already out lol) and got in baking motion :D.

As I began the recipe it did start out in difficulty for me in beating butter and sugar together with a wooden spoon. Not a typical thing I see in recipes, but I followed the instructions. I definitely made sure to microwave that butter a little before beating the hell out of it with the sugar. Once I got that painful thing out of the way everything that proceeded from there was very simple.
While I waited for my dough to chill. I made myself a homemade cookie template since I have no square cookie cutters in sight. Wow! you think a passionate self taught baker like me would have at least one on hand, but no, however I should look into some one day in the future.
Anyways, the homemade disposable template I made came out pretty well through just using yellow construction paper and measuring it out to be exactly 9 cm by 9 cm. I was pretty proud of myself in accomplishing my piece of paper lol :P.

Once the dough was done, I use my perfect little piece of paper on that well rolled out dough and proceeded to do my work. Everything seem to be pretty simple from there along as you make sure not to score the dough to deep. If  you do you end up with big problems like I did with a few in the beginning. Gradually I learned the best way is to use the dull side of the butter knife and just tap it lightly. I was quite bummed out by the breaks once baked;however that comes with the territory of delicate cookies.

The most fun came with decorating the cookies just before putting them in the oven. Placing those little white chocolate in your own pattern was cute. I am not exactly sure how high in the number dominoes goes to I can imagine it might be up to ten? :S. If anyone knows be sure to comment so I can use that advice for future use.

Once the cookies went in the oven I watched them like a hawk to make sure the chocolate chip wouldn't burn. The first two batches the chips came out being golden brown which I didn't want in appearance There perfectly edible and reminded me of smores :P. The next matches came out  exactly the way I wanted;however were very delicate and to be cool for sometime before any pictures or eaten could be done :(. I hate waiting to eat something that looks so good.

Oh!!!!!,When I took a bite out these it was like eating a thin, flaky brownie if that's possible lol :D.There slightly crunchy, but more soft then anything. Its very dark chocolate flavor and the smooth sweet flavor of the white chocolate paired so well together. Plus I heard from my family that the texture was more fudge like the next day :P, well that's always good in my book.

Sometimes these cookies break if put in a cookie jar so make sure to lay flat as possible or just eat them quick lol :P. These dominoes are definitely a change from the ordinary cookies and if your looking for uniqueness this the recipe for you. I love to see some domino cookie with white dough with dark chocolate chips. I think that look really awesome! :P.

What should I bake next? ummmm choice, choices :P. Also news for anyone I'll be continuing editing my past recipes and giving helpful tips, should be lots of fun getting involved.

Chocolate Dominoes (Adapted From The Big Book Of Baking)

1 cup butter,softened
3/4 cup Granulated sugar
1 egg yolk,lightly beaten
2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
Pinch of salt
1/3 cup white chocolate chips

1. In a medium sized bowl, mix well soft butter and sugar together with a wooden spoon( if butter isn't soft enough yet, place the amount in the microwave for 5-10 seconds, should help).

2. Beat in egg yolk and vanilla extract with a electric beater, low speed.

3.Sift together flour, cocoa and a pinch of salt into bowl.( Scoop and level the flour & cocoa).Stir until well combined.

4.Stir until ball format, use your hands to shape a ball. Then cut it in half equally to form two balls. Wrap both in plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for 30-60 minutes.

5. Oven to 375F. Use non stick pan or line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.

6.Take dough out, unwrap and roll out dough on a floured surface.( Be sure not to roll out the dough to thin, cause the cookies will  be very delicate)

7.Stamp cookies with 9 cm plain square cutter. ( I made my own template by measuring out a 9cm by 9cm square on construction paper and cutting it out)

8.Then cut the square in half  to form rectangles.. Place on cookie sheet and make a score line across the center without cutting through.( The best results is to use the dull side of the butter knife and do a slight tap on the dough).

9. Now here's the fun part, begin to top the cookies with white chocolate chips in dominoes patterns.( Be sure to press gently and it helps to chop the tip off to press in ). For ideas on patterns look at my pictures.

10.Bake in oven for about 10 minutes,or until golden brown. ( Be sure to watch like a hawk because chocolate chips will brown quickly).

11. Make sure to let cool so they begin to harden and become stable.Be very careful transferring to a wire rack to cool.

  1. Nicely done! How fascinating, I have never seen a cookie like that before and I would have watched them like a hawk too. I am so impressed you're in the holiday spirit already! I'm less enthusiastic but holiday baking is so much fun. Can't wait to see what you will make next!
